Name the five main stages of human brain development
Proliferation, Migration, Differentiation, Myelination, Synaptogenesis
Describe Proliferation
New cells produced in neural tube beginning when embryo is 2 1/2 weeks old
Describe Migration
Immature neurons migrate to final destination in brain beginning about 8 weeks. Once there, they aggregate with other cells to form brain structures.
Describe Differentiation
After migration, neurons begin to look differently than other cells because they develop axons and dendrites.
Describe Myelination
Glial cells form insulating sheath around cell's axon, only happens to some neurons, most of it happens postnatally
Describe Synaptogenesis
This is the forming of synapses; happens at different times depending on specific area of brain; mostly occurs postnatally; influenced by endogenous (genetic) and exogenous (experience) factors
Define apoptosis
Cell death; "pruning process;" "serves to "fine-tune" brain development
