Developed Folkways, Mores, and Laws

Folkways: everyday norms based on customs or tradition "poor taste"
Mores: Based on broad societal morals whose infraction is treated much more seriously than folkways but not as severe as the law. Example: interracial marriage, illegitmate childbearing, drug addiction "sin"
Laws: infractions that are delt with by the police, prisons, mental hospitals, justice system "crime"

Achieved Deviant: these are the attributes that you work to get Example: Kinky sex, smoking pot, promiscutiy
Ascribed Deviance: attributes that you are born with
Example: extremely poor, extremely rich, black, white

Sin: religious disorders, non-normative behaviors or attitudes
Sick: psychiatric problems, homosexuality, sexual misconduct
Example: this is how legal medicalization was formed in this country, people believe that there is a pill for everything so therefore psychiatric issues can be delt with medically
Select: some behaviors such as eating disorders, self mutilation are now not viewed as "out of control" these disorders are lifestyle choices

Due to how the community reacts to a deviant person they began to treat people who they believe to be deviant as deviants therefore the one who feels this deviant pressure starts to act that way

Negative Deviance: underconformity/negatively appraised
Ex: Jeffrey Dahmer effect
Rate Busting: over conformity/negatively evaluated
Ex: Geek Phenonemon
Deviance Admiration: under conformity/positively appraised
Ex: John Gotti
Postive Deviance: over conformity/positively appraised
Ex: Mother Theresa

Defines deviance as an infraction of some agreed upon rule. It asks "who breaks the rules" and believes it is due to something in that persons life that caused them to react that way

Deviance is the product of responses of other people to the behavior that shapes it into thinking

Master status dominates over all other statuses. We think doctors to mostly be white, middle upper class, protestant, so when we have a black, female doctor sometimes people don't believe it to be as good. Same with deviance, deviance will overide other statuses, even good ones.

The values of social groups that vary substantially both within and between cultures

Believes deviance to be a positive function to society
Deviance defies what is acceptable and what is not accpetable in society so there will never be a place void of any deviance...if thats the case non-deviant acts will now be deemed deviant

General Strain Theory: people engage in crime because they experience strains or stressors
ex: need money - become upset - experience negative emotions - cope through crime

Objective Strain: events dislike by most people of a group
ex: being physically abused, questioning masculinity
Selective Strain: events disliked by a particular person
ex: getting divorced, failing a class

Experienced Strain: Strain experenced by a particular person
Vicarious Strain: strain experienced through another person or group of people
Anticipated Strain: the anticipated strain of some sort of factor
