How do views on healthcare differ from America to the rest of the world (Europe especially) ?
-Europe sees health care as a basic human right, where as America has a health care system based on a market.
*America spends more than any other industrialized country on healthcare, but we are far from having the healthiest population.

What do some Americans do to avoid high medical costs?
-Some buy medicine from Canada or they go to places with cheaper surgery costs like India. (This is called outsourcing healthcare)
Why are health care expenditures so high in the U.S.?
-Americans visit doctors less than people in other countries, American medicine is high tech, but more expensive.
What is "defensive medicine"?
-Doctors may order extra tests to make sure that they don't get sued for medical malpractice.

-Through private insurance plans that usually come from one's jobs.
Why do people make the association of jobs with health insurance?
-In WWII, the government imposed a wage freeze. Many employers, though, paid health benefits to attract workers. Its' happened that way ever since.

-60% of Americans.
What is the health maintenance organization?
-Organization contracted by individuals or insurance companies to provide health care for a yearly fee. Such network health plans limit the choice of doctors and treatments. About 60% of Americans are enrolled in health maintenance organizations or similar programs.
What is national health insurance?
-A compulsory insurance program for all Americans that would have the government finance citizens' medical care. First proposed by President Harry S Truman, the plan was soundly opposed by the American Medical Association.
What is Medicare?
-A program added to the Social Security system in 1965 that provides hospitalization insurance for the elderly and permits older Americans to purchase inexpensive coverage for doctor fees and other medical expenses.
