Hotel or Inn
An establishment whose primary business is providing lodging facilities for the general public, and that offers one or more of the following services: F&B, housekeeping, concierge-bell-and door attendent (uniformed services), and use of furniture & fixtures
Size of hotels
50-2,000 rooms -- larger ones can have up to 5,000
Size of Inns
5-50 rooms -- provide a higher level of personalized service
Motel
- caters primarily to guests traveling by automobile
- located in suburban roadside areas
- do not offer full range of services and facilities
Size (number of guestrooms) 4 categories
- under 150 rooms
- 150-299 rooms
- 300-600 rooms
- more than 600 rooms
Target Markets
Distinctly defined groups of travelers that the hotel seeks to retain or attract as guests
Market Segmentation
Identifies smaller, distinct groups within larger target markets and to develop products and services aimed specifically at satisfying these segments
Commercial Hotels
- located in downtown/business districts
- largest group of hotel types
- cater mostly to business travelers but also to tour groups, individual tourists and small conference groups
- Guests stay short lengths (aka transient hotels)
- Amenities=complimentary newspaper, in-room coffee maker, cable, free internet, 24-hour room service, dining rooms and cocktail lounges
- Conference rooms, suites, room service, banquet service, swimming pools, health club, tennis courts, saunas
Airport Hotels
-Located close to major travel centers
- Vary widely in size and level of service
- Target Market = business clientele, airline passengers and airline personel
- Have conference rooms to attract these travelers
Suite Hotels
- Feature rooms with a living room area and a seperate bedroom
- Generally have fewer and more limited public areas and guest services
- Target Market = people relocating, frequent travelers (home away from home), vacationing families, professional travelers (accountants, lawyers, and executives) who can work from their room
- Offer complimentary evening receptions, breakfast, or snack services

Extended-Stay Hotels
-Similar to suite hotels but offer more complete kitchen amenities in guestroom
- Intended for travelers who stay 5 nights or longer
- Do not provide food, beverage, uniformed services or valet services
-Home like feeling

Residential Hotel
- Provide long term or permanent accomodations for people in urban or suburban areas
- House people who can afford daily, limited hotel services
- Guest quarters include a sitting room, bedroom, and small kitchenette
-May provide daily housekeeping, telephone, front desk, and uniformed services.
- Restaurant and lounge make also be located on the premises
Resort Hotels
- Located in the mountains, on an island or in some other exotic location away from crowded residential areas
- Provide extensive food and beverage, valet and room services for vacationers
- Provide special recreational activities
