What are the three types of muscle tissue? Give a brief description of each.
-Skeletal: forms the large muscles responsible for gross body movements-Cardiac: found only in the heart and responsible for the circulation of blood-Smooth: found in the walls of visceral organs and a variety of other locations, where it provides elasticity, contractility and support
a. Epithelia cover surfaces and line passageways; connective tissue ____ and ____ parts of the body.
b. Together these tissues provide....?
a. support and interconnect
b. provide a strong, interwoven framework within which the organs of the body can function (several vital functions involve movement)
What are muscle tissues and what are they responsible?
-Tissues specialized for contraction.-They are responsible for movement. (***Movement is produced by these types of cells)
Describe the physical features of skeletal muscles tissue/cell?
-very large cells-long-slender-cylindrical-striated: actin and myosin filaments are organized into repeating groups that give the cells a striated appearance-multinucleate: each muscle fiber has several hundred nuclei distributed just inside the plasma membrane
What is another name for skeletal muscle tissue? And why do they have this alternate name?
-Alternate name is muscle fibbers (because the individual skeletal muscle cells are long and slender )
How do skeletal muscle tissue or muscle fibers reproduce?
-New muscle fibers are produced through the division of myosatellite cells (satellite cells); stem cells that persist in adult skeletal muscle tissue
Determine if skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscle tissues are striated, non-striated, voluntary or involuntary.
-Skeletal: striated voluntary muscle***voluntary - muscle does not contract unless stimulated by nerves, and the nervous system provides voluntary control over their activities
-Cardiac: striated involuntary muscle-Smooth: non-striated involuntary muscle
What are the locations of skeletal muscle tissue?
--Combined with connective tissues and neural tissue in skeletal muscles
What are the functions of skeletal muscle tissue?
-Moves or stabilizes the position of the skeleton-Guards entrances and exits to the digestive, respiratory, and urinary tracts-Generates heat-Protects internal organs
Describe the physical features of cardiac muscles tissue/cell?
-short-branched (as a result of extensive connections with one another)-striated-usually with one nucleus-cells are interconnected by intercalated discs
What are the locations of cardiac muscle tissue?
-Heart only
What are the functions of cardiac muscle tissue?
-Circulates blood-Maintains blood(hydrostatic) pressure
Describe the physical features of smooth muscles tissue/cell?
-short-spindle-shaped (with tapering ends)-non-striated-single central (oval) nucleus
What are the locations of smooth muscle tissue?
-Found in the walls of blood vessels and in digestive, respiratory, urinary and reproductive organs
What are the functions of smooth muscle tissue?
-Moves food, urine and reproductive tract secretions-Controls diameter of reparatory passageways-Regulates diameter of blood vessels
