Russell Conwell
"Acres of Diamonds" 1880s- 1890s. a Baptist minister, became a spokesman for the popular idea that great wealth was in the reach of all industrious Americans. He delivered the "Acres of Diamonds" lecture over 6000 times in 10 years. His thesis was that untold wealth was available to any intelligent and industrious American willing to seize opportunities. said "I say that you ought to, and that it is your duty to get rich"

1879. Progress and Poverty- argued that poverty was the inevitable side- effect of progress. blamed poverty of the monopolist. Single tax- everyone the same/ would distribute the wealth more evenly.
Edward Dellamy
1888. Looking Backward- Utopian novel which predicted the US would become a socialist state in which the government would own and oversee the means of production and this would unite all people under moral laws. Inspired socialistic clubs. Founded the  journal New Nation in 1891. 
William Graham Summer 
1906 . American disciple of Herbert Spencer. Opposed any government intervention in society. Influential Yale professor in the late 1800s. Wrote "Folkways"- advocated Social Darwinism.
Cornelius Vanderbilt
1794- 1877. started in the steamship business in the 1820s and moved into the railroad business. By 1867 controlled New York Central Railroad. 1 mill. to Vanderbilt University. By the time he died his fortune was about 100 million
Leland Stanford
Late 1800s. Multimillionaire railroad builder. Heavily invested in the plan to build a transcontinental railroad. Founded Central Pacific Railroad. During his presidency of the railroad track built east meet union pacific at Promontory Utah. Jane (wife) founded Stanford University in 1885
Phillip Armour
Late 1800s.  Built the Armour& Company meat packing corporation in the late 1800s. He began shipping hogs to Chicago for slaughter and was a pioneer in the use of refrigeration in the meat industry and in the canning of meat
Gustavus Swift
Late 1800s. He enlarged fresh meat markets through branch slaughterhouses and refrigeration. He created a monopoly in the meat industry.
