Front Back
Tissue
A group of cells that work together to perform a function
Organ
2 or more tissues working together to perform a function
Organ System
2 or more organ working together to perform a function
Epithelial Tissue
Tightly packed cells that cover a surface or line a cavity....for protection from injury, foreign pathogens, micro organisms, and water loss. Some secrete mucus that acts like fly paper to trap pathogens. Innervated, but avascular.
Squamous Epithelial Cells
Shape: Flat, plate-like
Location: Skin, Mouth lining, and Aveoli (lungs)
Function: Easy diffusion of materials due to flatness through them. Easily sloughed off and replaced.
Cuboidal Epithelial Cells
Shape: Cube
Location: Kidney
Function: Tightly bonded together to protect keep urine in urethra.
Columnar Epithelial Cells
Shape: Column
Location: Digestive Tract and Female Reproductive Tract
Function: Absorption & Secretion. Often accompanied by Goblet Cells (mucus) and Cilia (movement). They assist in movement of food through intestines, and movement of oocyte through fallopian tubes to uterus.
Goblet Cells
Unicellular Exocrine Gland Cells that secrete mucus usually found in Columnar Epithelial Cells
Cilia
Hair-like structures that gently move material in Epithelial tissues.
Transitional Epithelial Cells
Shape: changes from cube (empty) to squamous (full)
Location: Bladder, ex
Function: stretchable cells that allow for expansion, empty bladder to full bladder, ex.
Simple Epithelium
Single layer of Epithelial cells
Stratified Epithelium
2 or more layers of Epithelial cells
Location: Skin, epidermis for example
Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
Single layered Columnar Cells, but appear to be statified. Nuclei are offset from each other and look like alternating wine bottles or bowling pins. (Lungs ex.)
Muscle Tissue primary function? Describe shape. 3 different types?
Function: to contract.
Shape: long, thin, and connected on each end.
Types: Skeletal, Cardiac, Smooth
Skeletal (Voluntary or Striated) Muscle
Muscles under conscious control. Super long cells. They are multinucleate and contain striations
