Front Back
Dorsal body cavity
Closed, membrane-lined space which houses the central nervous system; its lining are the three connective tissue layers known as the mininges; it is located on the posterior of the head and trunk and confines the skull and vertebrae
Cranial cavity
Partially closed, membrane-lined sterile anatomical space, a subdivision of the dorsal body cavity, which houses the superior portion of the central nervous system i.e., the brain, its lining are the cerebral mininges, confines the skull
Vertebral cavity
The partially closed, membrane-lined sterile anatomical space, a subdivision of the dorsal cavity, which houses the inferior portion of the central medially on the posterior of the trunk and housed within the confines of the vertebrae; contains the spinal cord
Ventral body cavity
The closed, membrane-lined sterile anatomical space which houses internal organs; its lining are various serous membranes; it is located medially on the anterior of the trunk and housed within the confines of the rib cage and trunk musculature
Thoracic cavity
The closed, partially membrane-lined sterile anatomical space, a subdivision of the ventral body cavity, houses the lungs, heart, and the
organs of the lungs
Pleural cavity
The two closed, membrane-lined sterile anatomical spaces, subdivisions of the ventral body cavity and of the thoracic cavity, houses the right and left lungs; located on the anterior of the trunk and confines the rib cage
Pericardial cavity
Closed, membrane-lined space, subdivisions of the ventral cavity and of the thoracic cavity, houses the heart, its lining which is located beneath the sternum confines the rib cage; it provides a protected, lubricated space for the heart to contract
Mediastinum
The closed sterile space, not lined by a serous membrane, houses the heart in a sac; it is located between two cavities to the right and left between the sternum
Abdominopelvic cavity
Closed, anatomical space which houses the digestive system; its lining is a serous membrane; it is located medially on the anterior of the trunk,
Abdominal cavity
Partially closed, membrane-lined space which houses certain internal organs, the stomach, liver, intestines, and spleen: its lining is a serous membrane
Pelvic cavity
Partially closed, anatomical space which houses some of the reproductive organs, the urinary bladder, and the distal colons; its lining is a serous membrane;
Viscera
The soft internal organs of the body, especially those contained within abdominal and thoracic cavities
Serous membrane
A simple squamous lining found in the carious ventral body cavities which lines the walls off the cavities and the organs contained there in which produces a watery fluid which lubricates the lining surfaces
Pleura
The serous membrane which lines the pleural cavities and which covers the surfaces of the lungs and produces the lubricating pleural fluid
Pericardium
The serous membrane which lines the pericardial cavity and which covers the surface of the heart and produces the lubricating pericardial fluid
