What does anaerobic mean ?
It just means without oxygen.
Where does anarobic respiration take place ?
It takes place in animal and plant cells and some microorganisms when there is very little or no oxygen.
Describe when anaerobic respiration takes place in human cells ?
When you do vigorous exercise your body can't supply enough oxygen to your muscles for aerobic respiration so respires anaerobically.
Describe when anaerobic respiration takes place in plant cells ?
If the soil in a plant becomes waterlogged and there is no oxygen available to the roots the plant respires anaerobically.
Describe when anaerobic respiration takes place in bacteria cells ?
Bacteria can get under our skin through puncture wounds - under the skin there is very little oxygen which is when the bacteria needs to respire anaerobically to survive.
What is always released in anaerobic respiration and what is always the reactants and products ?
Energy is always released and the reactants and products are different depending on the type of cell.
What can anaerobic respiration produce ?
Lactic acid and the reactant is glucose. This is what we call cramp.
What two products do plant cells and some microorganisms produce ?
Ethanol and carbon dioxide.
What is fementation ?
Its when micoorganisms break down sugars into other products as they respire anaerobically. Humans use fermentation to make lots of things.
Name the three things we use fermentation for ?
1. Biogas 2. Bread 3. Alcohol
Describe how fermentation is used in biogas ?
Biogas fuel is used for things like heating and lighting. Lots of different microorganisms are used to produce biogas. They ferment plant and animal waste which contains carbohydrates (glucose). This produces mainly methane and carbon dioxide.
Describe how fermentation is used in bread ?
The microorganism yeast ferments the flour which contains carbohydrates (glucose) and releases carbon dioxide to make the bread rise.
Describe how fermentation is used in alcohol ?
Alcohol or ethanol is made when the yeast ferments the sugar to form ethanol - the sugar is in things like grapes (wine) and barley (beer).
