What is a base?
Substance that can bind with free H+ and remove it from the solution. The more H+ a substance can bind with, the stronger the base.
What is K? K=_________
K is the dissociation constant, which the extent of dissociation of a given acid is constant. K=[H+][HCO3-]/[H2CO3]
What is pH? How is it expressed mathmatically?
PH is the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution expressed numerically It is the negative log of H+ concentration pH=log1/[H+]
A change in 1 pH value says what about [H+]?
Represents a 10 fold change in [H+]
If the pH of one solution is 7 and the other is 6, then what does that mean about H+?
The solution with pH=6 would hold 10 times more H+
If a liter of H2O contains 10-7 moles of H+, then what is its pH?
PH=7
What scale is pH on? What is considered neutral at 25 degrees celsius?
0 to 14 neutral is pH=7
For H2O, what is neutrality? what does this mean?
When [H+]=[OH-] the concentration of which varies with temperature so, a pH of 7 is not always neutral
As temperature increases, pH_______. For example, at 25 degrees celsius pH is 7 but at 30 degrees celsius it is at _______.
Decreases pH=6.8
What solutions are considered acidic? basic/alkaline?
Solutions with a pH below neutral (7) solutions with a pH above neutral (7)
What does the pH of blood average at? Is venous blood pH (greater than or less than) arterial blood?
PH=7.4 it is less than
What is considered acidosis?
When blood pH falls below 7.35
What is considered alkalosis?
When blood pH falls above 7.45
What blood pH is considered death?
Below 6.8 or above 8.0
______ pH needs to be constantly monitored and regulated because the body is constantly producing H+.
Body fluid
