Total Flash Cards » 9

1.

Oraganic compounds contain...

Carbon and Hydrogen

2.

An example of inorganic is...

water

3.

The four categories of organic molecules are...

Lipids Proteins Carbohydrates Nucleac acids

4.

Enzymes are...

special proteins that regulate chemical reactions

5.

Use as many big words as you can to explain what happens when you leave a carrot in salt water over night.

i.e.: carrot cells are selectively permeable to salt and water. Salt diffuses into the carrot cells, water diffuses out of the carrot, which is called osmosis. the salt and water are trying to reach equilibrium. this is called passive transport bc no energy is required. This is not active transport bc no energy was required. This is not endocytosis or exocytosis bc salt and water are passing through the membrane. when water is sucked out of the cytoplasm, the cell contracts inside the cell wall, making the carrot flimsy

6.

The total of all the chemical reactions in an organism is referring to that organims...

mteabloism (think of Elle's blonde friend in Legally Blonde who couldn't say metabolism... she said metrabolism)

7.

Photosynthesis- name who, what, where, when

who: producers what: turning sunlight, water, and carbon into sugar and oxygen where: the chloroplasts when: all the time

8.

Respiration- who, what, where, when

who: all organisms what: turning sugar and oxygen into carbon dioxide, water, and usable energy where:the mitochondria when: all the time

9.

Why do plants create oxygen with photosynthesis and the oxygen goes out when they need oxygen too?

Plants make more oxygen than they need
