The currency of Bangladesh is Bangladeshi taka which comes from the Sanskrit word tangka that denotes currency, money or notes. The banknotes 1, 2 and 5 are controlled by the Ministry of Finance of Bangladesh and the banknotes 10 and above are controlled by the Bangladesh Bank. Apart from their coins, the first banknotes were released in 1972 but all banknotes were replaced in 2001 for more secure ones.

Banknotes 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 featured the image of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of Bangladesh on the front side and Shaheed Minar Dhaka, Shona Mosque, Baitul Mukarram, Sixty Dome Mosque, Zainul Abedin’s painting, Star Mosque, Agriculture in Bangladesh and Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban respectively at the back.
