The distance traveled by a vehicle is measured and recorded by the odometer. The odometer’s sole purpose in your vehicle is to measure the distance traveled by the vehicle. An odometer can be electronic, mechanical or a combination of both electric and mechanical. The odometer has actually been around for a very long time as early forms of it existed in both the Ancient Greco-Roman world and ancient China.

The odometer is also sometimes referred to as either a mileometer or a milometer. This is especially true in the United Kingdom. The odometer played a part in measuring the distance of routes traveled in the ancient world including travels made by Alexander the Great.
