Les Goodman was the scapegoat in “the monsters are due on maple street.” He was used as a scapegoat because he was an odd one. A shadow passed over, accompanied by a roar and flash of light, and made the power go off; this includes the cars, stoves, lamps, and phones.

When all the community members gathered to discuss the happening and make speculations, Les paid no attention to it and went on with his life. Making matters worse, everyone noticed, later on, they found out that his car came on, making them think he is the alien.

During the discussion, someone pointed out that Les looks up to the sky in the night as if he is waiting or communicating with someone. Everyone was looking for somebody in the community to use as a scapegoat or point to as the alien.

Maple street residents are worried about alien invasion. One character, called Steve Brand decides to leave town however, tommy forbids him to do so. He says that there may be a risk of alien invasion. Meanwhile, Les Goodman s another resident of the area. He tries to start his car but he is unable to do so. .

In vain, he leaves the car and starts to go back when the car starts on its own. Other residents think that this weird incident is supernatural and start assuming that les is an alien. Unfortunately less Goodman does end up becoming a scapegoat by the end as he has an odd personality and is always outside at night looking up at the sky.

He had an odd personality and he always sat outside all night looking up to the sky, so neighbors assumed he was the cause of their problems.
