Expansion Slots

Plastic "slots" anywhere from 3" to 11" long and approximately ½" wide, most visible on the motherboard are the expansion slots. They are used to install various devices in the computer to expand its capabilities. Few such expansion devices are video, network, sound, and disk interface cards.

A motherboard is likely to have three main types of expansion slots namely,

  • ISA

  • PCI

  • AGP

Each type differs in its appearance and function.
