A+ Certification Study Guide: Diagnosing & Troubleshooting

Removable Storage

Troubleshooting external storage device is almost similar to the internal devices. The external devices have an external unit with a plug-in power adapter. These devices typically connect to the computer through the standard I/O port connections, which requires a signal cable that runs between the computer and the device. Based on the exact type of storage device being used, it might have a removable media cartridge or a container.

A device driver must be installed for the device to work with the computer. This is typically a function of the system's Plug-n-Play process. The computer should first detect the external storage and load the driver for it automatically. Incase the computer is not able to locate proper driver; it prompts you to supply the location where the driver could be found. Usually external storage systems do not need a support application to be installed. However it is recommended that you refer to the device's documentation and follow its installation procedures to determine whether the device can be installed with just a driver.
