A+ Certification Study Guide: Diagnosing & Troubleshooting

DVD/DVDRW (Cont...)

Currently a number of manufacturers make various types of writeable DVD drives. There are actually five types of writeable DVD media. Since most drives can use only one or two of these types, it's necessary that you buy the correct / suitable type.

  • DVD-RAM- It's a rewriteable/erasable media similar to CD-RW, which can be single or double-sided. DVD-RAM is mostly kept in a closed disc caddy to protect its surfaces.

  • DVD-R- It's a writeable/non-erasable media similar to CD-R; some of the DVD-RAM and all the DVD-RW drives are capable of using DVD-R media.

  • DVD-RW- It's a single-sided rewriteable/erasable media similar to that of CD-RW. However, DVD-RW drives can also write to DVD-R media.

  • DVD+RW- It's a rewriteable/erasable media. This is also similar to CD-RW, but it is not interchangeable with DVD-RW or DVD-RAM.

  • DVD+R- It is a writeable/non-erasable media, which is also similar to CD-R, but not interchangeable with DVD-R. Most of the second generation DVD+RW drives also support this media, though early models do not support.
