The techniques that could be used in order to minimize buffer under runs include placing the DVD writer on an IDE channel. This helps the drive from competing with other drives for the channel's available bandwidth. Reducing write speed options in the R/W software can help in minimizing data flow problems.

There is also a possibility that the R/W software for the drive is not compatible with the operating system version that is being used, or with the controller chip available on the drive. Similarly, the operating system's multimedia enhancement drivers (DirectX in Windows operating systems) may not be compatible with the controller or the R/W application.

It is always better to consult the operating system's hardware and software compatibility lists before buying and installing a CD-RW or DVD-RW drive in a system.
