DVD/DVD RW drives write problems are classified into three basic areas:
Quality of the drive's controller circuitry.
Make and version of the drive's read/write application interface software.
Compatibility with the operating system's and multimedia support systems.
The quality of the drive's controller circuitry
Basically, the drives quality depends on the type of its controller IC. In less expensive drives, the BIOS extension on the drive may not support all of the R/W functions that are needed to coordinate with the application package or the drivers of the operating system.
All newer DVD drives are ATAPI compatible. Hence they may not have an effective method of controlling buffer under run errors, which occur when the system transfers data to the drive faster than the drive can buffer and write it on to the disc. The ATAPI compatibility of the chipset ensures that the DVD read functions work well.
