A+ Certification Study Guide: Diagnosing & Troubleshooting

CD/CDRW (Cont...)

Operating System Check

In Microsoft's Windows operating systems, you can access the contents of the CD-ROM through the CD icon in the My Computer window. The information of the CD-ROM drive is found in the System Properties dialog box. This can be accessed by double-clicking the System icon in Control Panel. The Properties of the CD-ROM drive is found on the Settings tab.

Incase correct drivers for the CD-ROM are not installed, load them up or contact the CD-ROM manufacturer and obtain the correct Windows driver. Also verify the computer for old AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files, which may contain commands concerning older CD-ROM, drives as these commands are likely to overrule the Windows CD-ROM configurations and can create problems.

Hardware Check

If the hard drive works and the CD-ROM drive does not work then most likely the problem lies with the CD-ROM drive unit.
