Troubleshooting CD-ROM Drives
The steps followed to troubleshoot the problems related to CD-ROM drive are almost similar to that of the Hard Drive as the connections and data paths are the same. Generally, three levels of troubleshooting are applied to overcome CD-ROM problems: Configuration level, Operating system level, and the Hardware level.
Configuration Check
In most computers, the CD-ROM with the hard disk drive shares a controller or host adapter. Therefore it is necessary to check the Master/Slave jumper settings to ensure that they are set correctly. Usually, the CD-ROM drive is set up as the master on the secondary IDE channel. This way each drive will have its own communications channel and there is no need of sharing. Incase three or four IDE devices are installed in the system, it becomes necessary to determine which devices can share the channels most effectively.
