The process followed to check the hard drive on a Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP is similar to the one done for checking a Windows 9x-based system. In Windows NT and Windows 2000, the disk partitioning process is performed using the Disk Administrator and Disk Management utilities. All the basic functions that are performed by the FDISK are performed by these utilities. For example, both the above utilities can be used in partitioning drives and both displays the basic layout of the system's disks.
They also provide advanced functions associated with enterprise (large-scale, business-oriented) computing systems. They can also be used to create either traditional primary and extended partitions for MS-DOS/Windows 9x systems or for Windows NT and Windows 2000 computers. Creating volumes (partitions that involve space on multiple physical drives) can also be done using the above.
In order to access the Disk Management snap-in,
Click Start >> Settings >> Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> double-click on the Computer Management icon and Select Disk Management from the list of available tools.
