IEEE-1394 Adapters and Ports

Most Pentium-based computers today have USB as the default high-speed port. FireWire ports are created by installing an adapter card in the system to provide physical connection points. Most computers today have no direct BIOS support for IEEE-1394 buses. However, IEEE-1394 adapter cards are plug-and-play compliant, so they are easily detected by Microsoft's Windows operating system.

The FireWire devices do not communicate directly with the computer instead they work with the controller on the adapter card. The Computer should detect the new card when it is installed and load the driver for it automatically. If the computer cannot locate the proper driver, it prompts you to give the location from where the driver can be located.

Next, you should open Device Manager to ensure that the device has been recognized there and also to check if there is any conflicting device driver information (for example, an exclamation point in a yellow circle).
