The Infrared Data Association (IrDA) specifies communication range up to a maximum of 2 meters (6 feet) between two IR devices.IrDA data transfers are carried out in half-duplex mode and the two devices must have a clear line between the transmitter and receiver. The receiver must be located within 15 degrees of center with the line of transmission. Therefore, you should test a failing infrared connection by placing the infrared transceivers as close together as possible and both the devices should be straight inline with each other.
Troubleshooting steps for Infra Red Devices:
Verify that Infra red communication is enabled in Device Manager.
To verify that the plug-n-play devices for IR are enabled right click on the Infra Red icon on the taskbar and check if the device is enabled
Ensure that proper device drivers are installed for the device and that there is no conflict in the port settings.
Finally check the CMOS settings for the infrared communication and port settings. Ensure that the port settings are correct as specified by the device vendor.
