  1. Ensure that the driver being used is of the correct type and is installed properly. Try acquiring an upgraded version from the manufacturer's web site.

  2. Check the external connections and the cables (running from the port to the motherboard headers) are not loose.

  3. If you have just installed a new system, or upgraded your motherboard in an existing system, and if you are using an AT or baby AT style motherboard, you should have used the cables that came with the board to connect to the parallel port connector on the back of the system case. Please note that these cables are not universal. When you upgrade your motherboard and try to save time by leaving the old cables in place and then connecting them to the LPT1 port header on the motherboard, there are chances that your port may not work.
