A+ Certification Study Guide: Diagnosing & Troubleshooting

Parallel

There can be multiple reasons for a Parallel port / device not working properly, for instance:

  • Loose connections or incorrect cables.

  • Incorrect printer drivers or resource settings.

Usage of advanced printer port (modes). Troubleshooting steps

  1. Ensure that the printer is working fine. To start with, try printing a plain text file. To be doubly sure test the printer on another PC and see if it is working correctly.

  2. Check if the BIOS settings for the parallel port are configured correctly. Usually, IRQ 7 is assigned to LPT1, which is the printer port available on most of the systems. If it is set to IRQ 5, then there might be a conflict with the sound card, as they usually try to use IRQ 5 for themselves.
