If an error message shown by the system is indicative of a port problem or if the equipment that is connected to a port is not performing properly or not performing at all, in such instances the problem could have arisen due to any of the following reasons:

  • Cable between the I/O port and the peripheral device could be faulty.

  • Peripheral device itself may be faulty.

  • Settings in the BIOS could be incorrect.

  • Settings in the system's device manager could be incorrect.

  • I/O port logic on the system board could be faulty.

Some of the Common Troubleshooting steps are:

  1. Check if there are any loose contacts / connections as well as for cables, that may be damaged physically.

  2. Examine the sockets of the connector and the port.

  3. Enter the system BIOS and check and see if the configuration of the device or port is correct.

  4. Run a hardware diagnostics on the device. This is usually supplied by the hardware vendor to test if the device is working properly

The above steps help us to isolate the problems in the I/O devices. We will look at how to troubleshoot each device in the upcoming lessons.
