Check the driver:

If you are not able to change your display settings then the most probable cause could be bad drivers or wrong drivers installed. If you see a standard PCI/VGA adapter entry in the display settings under control panel then it means the drivers are not installed for the device. You will have to uninstall the bad drivers and install the correct drivers from the vendors CD's or websites.
