Termination
Termination lets the Master device know that the end of the chain is reached so that it can stop sending commands. If the termination is not set, then the master will not receive the acknowledgment from the last device and hence it might simply wait to receive the termination. This might eventually result in "time out" after waiting for a specific time.
Generally, samplers are to be put up at the end of the external chain (from the outside port on the SCSI card), as they often have only one connector and hence you cannot connect beyond that. However, most of the samplers are "auto terminating" which means that they get to know when they are the last device and act accordingly. However, internal CD ROM devices are not that smart, and it is necessary that you have to turn the termination "ON" on the last device. Termination is set by either a jumper or a dip- switch, much like IDs on most devices.
