A+ Study Guide: Installing IDE & SCSI Devices

Jumper Block/DIP switch settings (Cont...)
  • Delay Auto Start

This jumper asks the drive to start automatically, but after waiting for a predefined number of seconds from the time power is applied / ON. This is also used to offset motor startup load on systems that have many drives.

  • Stagger Spin

An enhanced version of "Delay Auto Start" is stagger pin. When a system equipped with many hard drives have this option set for each unit, the drives stagger their startup time by multiplying a user-defined constant time with their SCSI device ID. This is to be sure that no two drives on the same SCSI channel starts up simultaneously.

  • Narrow/Wide

Some drives are provided with a jumper to control whether they will function in narrow or wide mode.

  • Force SE

Makes newer Ultra2, Wide Ultra2, Ultra 160, Ultra160+ or other LVD SCSI drives to be forced to use single-ended (SE) operation instead of low voltage differential (LVD).

  • Disable Parity

Parity checking on the SCSI bus is turned off.
