Domain Name Server (or System) - It's an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. This system translates a domain name such as proprofs.com into the Internet Protocol (IP) numbers (66.226.90.62) to find the correct web site. The network of computers that constitute the Internet map domain names to their corresponding IP numbers. The data is then made available to all computers and users on the Internet.
As domain names are alphabetic, they're easier to remember. The Internet however, is really based on IP addresses. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the corresponding IP address.
The DNS is a general purpose distributed, replicated, data query service. The principal use is the lookup of host IP addresses based on host names. The style of host names now used in the Internet is called "domain name", because they are the style of names used to look up anything in the DNS. Some important domains are: .COM (commercial), .EDU (educational), .NET (network operations), .GOV (US government), and .MIL (US military). Most countries also have a domain, example .US (United States), .UK (United Kingdom), .AU (Australia).
