Following are few utilities commonly available on a Boot Disk:
Scandisk
Scandisk is a utility used to check the integrity of the Hard disk. It will check the hard drive for any physical damage and will also examine the file system for any errors. If minor errors are found, Scandisk can fix them. Otherwise it will list the errors that can't be fixed; and the Hard disk may have to be replaced. To initiate Scandisk, at the prompt type Scandisk <Drive letter>:
Note: The ScanDisk utility is not available in Windows XP/2000. However, you can use the Error-Checking tool to check the integrity of your hard disk. The Error-Checking tool is essentially Scan disk renamed on Windows 2000 machines.
Defragmenter
It is recommended to use the Defrag utility every time a Scan disk is run on the Hard drive. Defragmentation is a disk utilization process. It puts all the used space together in an order so that data access is easier and faster. To initiate Defragmentation on a drive, at the prompt type Defrag <Drive letter>:
