Task Manager (Cont...)

The Applications Tab

The Applications tab lists all the applications that are currently running. If an application has hanged then this is the tab to go on. The task column lists the software being used and the status column will show either "Running" or "Not Responding" status.

The Applications tab can be used to perform following actions on the programs listed.

End a program

If the system is hung due to an unresponsive program then the unresponsive software can be highlighted and then on clicking the End Task button, after a few seconds the application will close. Depending on the system settings, a dialogue box may appear wherein it'll ask the user whether to send a report to Microsoft or not. This procedure should take care of most of the program lockups on the system and it will bring Windows back to its normal functionality without having to restart.

Start a new program

The new task button is available on the Application tab, which is similar to the RUN option available on the Start menu. When in safe mode sometimes the RUN option may not be available on the Start menu. The New Task button can be used, which will open a dialog box where the user can type in the name of the program or a location of a file. The option can be of great help when Explorer.exe freezes. All the user need to do is to use the New Task button and type Explorer.exe in the box & then hit Enter.
