Last Known Good Configuration

This mode is effective only when used the first time the system is booted after the error message. Under this mode the system starts using the registry information and drivers that Windows saved at the last shutdown. If the system is already restarted then the changes made since the last successful startup will be lost. This mode does not solve problems caused by missing drivers or corrupt files, it only checks and corrects any incorrect configurations.

To start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration, follow these steps:

  1. Start your computer.

  2. When the message "Please select the operating system to start" appears, press the F8 key.

  3. On the Windows Advanced Options menu select Last Known Good Configuration and press ENTER.

  4. If you are running other operating systems on your computer, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER.

Enable Boot Logging

A log file is created when the system starts logging all the drivers and services that were loaded or not loaded. This file is called ntbtlog.txt and is located in the %windir% directory. This log file can be useful in determining the exact cause of system startup problems.
