Step-by-Step/Single Step Mode (Cont...)

When the system is started in this mode it begins by asking whether to load the DoubleSpace driver; choose yes if the hard drive is compressed. Then Windows will ask if the Registry should be processed; it is recommended to choose yes as the system configuration setting will be loaded. Then the system will begin loading the drivers.

The files Himem.sys, Dblbuff.sys, Nlsfunc.sys, and Ifshlp.sys should be processed to be able to boot further. The Autoexe.bat file should be skipped for the first time to avoid low level drivers. Then finally choose yes on loading the GUI. Then say "yes" on loading the remaining drivers. If Windows boots to the desktop then the issue is likely to be with the Autoexe.bat drivers. Otherwise redo the process and then find the device driver that is causing boot failure and then skip it next time you try the Step by step confirmation process. By doing this the issue can be isolated and the root cause to the problem can be determined.
