The Serial or PS/2 mouse devices drivers, standard keyboards drivers, hard disks & CD-ROM drives, and standard VGA device drivers are the essential drivers enabled while in the safe mode. The system firmware must support USB mouse and USB keyboard in order to use these input devices in safe mode.

The Event Log, Plug and Play, Remote Procedure Calls (RPCs) and Logical Disk Manager are the essential system services that are enabled.

Enabling these essential services and drivers allow the system to operate under these conditions.

  • If the computer consistently stops responding: restart the operating system in safe mode and use the tools that are available to diagnose and resolve problems.

  • If the computer starts with a blank or distorted video display: restart the computer in safe mode and uninstall the drivers or set the video adapter settings compatible with the monitor.

  • If recently installed hardware or software prevents you from starting Windows: boot to safe mode to uninstall the software or to remove the device drivers.
