Precautions and Troubleshooting:

  • The best practice to avoid being affected by registry failures is Registry backups. The registry hives can be stored in the operating system and if there is a registry corruption the most recent know good registry can be reloaded.

  • System restore is the utility used to perform registry backups in Windows XP and Windows ME. The utility is available in Windows 98 in the form of Scanreg restore (c:\Windows\command\scanreg /restore), which can be run from DOS.

  • Sometimes completely different, non-compatible applications will use the same extensions on their document files; this causes irregularities in registry resulting in a corruption. Such un-trusted applications should be avoided.

  • Few applications release beta versions for their software's these should not be installed, as there applications are most likely to contain bugs or program errors.

  • Avoid excess utilization of the CPU, running multiple programs at the same time can cause CPU over heating resulting undesirable results.
