The best practice to avoid being affected by registry failures is Registry backups. The registry hives can be stored in the operating system and if there is a registry corruption the most recent know good registry can be reloaded.
System restore is the utility used to perform registry backups in Windows XP and Windows ME. The utility is available in Windows 98 in the form of Scanreg restore (c:\Windows\command\scanreg /restore), which can be run from DOS.
Sometimes completely different, non-compatible applications will use the same extensions on their document files; this causes irregularities in registry resulting in a corruption. Such un-trusted applications should be avoided.
Few applications release beta versions for their software's these should not be installed, as there applications are most likely to contain bugs or program errors.
