Error in Config.sys line xxx

Click on the image to zoom

Config.sys file's content depends on the computer's configuration. If there is an error on the Config.sys file then it is not possible to simply replace it with another copy of the same file.

The error is actually caused on the line before the line number on the error.

For example, the message "Error in CONFIG.sys line 10" would mean that an error was caused on line 9.

In most cases the file gets corrupted due to driver conflicts when a new device is installed.

Troubleshooting and solution:

  • Remove any newly installed hardware on the system.

  • Check to see if the system can boot to Safe mode. If it does, then uninstall the device driver with bangs (yellow or red question marks '?' Cross marks 'X' or Exclamation marks '!').

  • Try a system restore if the system can boot to Safe mode.

  • Reinstall the operation system.
