Once the hard disk is ready for use then the next step is the installation of the operating system. If you have a blank hard disk or new disk then you must install from the scratch. You need to decide on what operating system will suit your computer and your requirements. Once you finalize the operating system then you need to purchase or keep the software disk handy with you.

The vendor will provide you with boot disk or startup disk whichever is required by the operating system. Principally you will have two choices: run the entire setup from a single CD or use a bootable floppy or installation disks. From Windows 98 onwards all the installation can be performed from a single CD. The CD is capable of booting and preparing the computer for installation. In some versions of Windows 95 you will need boot disk or startup disk and an installation CD.
