Boot Steps for Windows 9x System

Booting Windows 9x system consists of two parts namely the Boot strap process and Master boot record and boot sector.

ROM BIOS Bootstrap Process is given below:

  • Run the POST or the Power on Self Test routines

  • Read the master boot record and partition table

  • The Plug and Play BIOS verifies memory (RAM) for input/output (I/O) port addresses, interrupt request lines (IRQs), direct memory access (DMA) channels, and other settings required to configure Plug and Play devices on the computer

  • Disabling the Plug and Play devices found by the Plug and Play BIOS

  • Creating a map of used and unused resources

  • The Plug and Play devices are configured and re-enabled, one at a time.

Plug and Play devices are initialized using their default settings when the computer is started if a Plug and Play BIOS is not found on the computer.
