DEFRAG.EXE

Click on the image to zoom

Disk Defragmenter rearranges files and unused space on the hard disk so that programs run faster. To allow the computer to work at its highest efficiency, you should defragment the hard disk on a regular basis. Using defrag.exe is quicker to get to and easier than going through the Microsoft made GUI for disk de-fragmentation.

Syntax

defrag <volume> [ -a ] [ -f ] [ -v ] [ -? ] [ -b ]

Frequently Used Switches:

volume drive letter or mount point (d: or d:\vol\mountpoint)

-a Analyze only.

-f Force de-fragmentation, even if free space is low. Normally it requires 15% of your drive to be free space.

-v Verbose output.

-? Display this help text.

-b Defrags the boot files only.
