A+ Study Guide: System Files & Disk Partitions

Files

A file can be defined as a stream of bits that is stored as a single unit in a storage unit like the hard disk. Though file is a single stream it can be stored as multiple fragments of data in multiple locations. These files in the file system are managed by the operating system.

The operating system creates files in the format supported by the file system. It always assigns names so that it can be referred later.
