A directory is a container that holds subdirectories and files. A directory itself is a file and has a structure has a special structure about that contains the links to point to the data in the file. The directory structure looks like a hierarchical tree structure. All the entries in the directory are 32 bytes in length.

The directory stores the following information:

  1. File name and Extensions: The file names and extensions are dependent upon the operating system being used. In case you are using DOS 8.0 the directory structure supports 11 characters for file names.

  2. File Attribute byte: The file attributes in the directory inform if the file is a real file or a subdirectory. There are several types of file attributes that an operating system supports.
