A+ Study Guide: System Files & Disk Partitions

Primary Partition

To create the primary partition, first boot the computer from the boot disk and at the DOS prompt type FDISK. After that follow these steps.

  • Select option 1 (create DOS primary or logical drive) on the FDISK menu to create the primary partition.

  • On the second menu page again select 1 to create primary partition. Then on the next page FDISK will display the total disk space available for the hard disk. You may choose to use the entire hard disk space for the primary partition or percentage of the disk space can be defined for the primary partition.

  • After this FDISK will examine the disk and then creates the primary partition based on the selections you made.
