Disk Partitions

If you bought a new hard drive you need to partition the disk and then format the disk before it is ready for use. Partitioning is creating logical divisions on hard disk, which allows you to install operating system and manage your data on the computer. It also lets you to install multiple operating systems in the logical partitions.

Disk partitioning has the following advantages:

  1. Limitations of the operating system's file system (example some Microsoft operating system's support only FAT16 and others support NTFS or FAT32).

  2. If one partition is bad or the file system looses its integrity then only that partition is affected and not the entire hard disk.

  3. You can install multiple operating systems supporting different partitions in different partitions, which allows many operation systems to co-exist in the same hard disk.
