A+ Study Guide: System Files & Disk Partitions

Registry data files

The registry is the central repository of the system and hardware configuration. The data is stored in a structured hierarchy of keys, sub-keys, and named values. These files are referred as hives.

The following files store the registry data in Windows 95, 98 and ME.

  • SYSTEM.DAT
  • USER.DAT
  • POLICY.POL

For Windows NT,2000 and XP the following are the files which contain registry information.

  • Security
  • System
  • Default
  • Sam
