SYSTEM.INI or the System Initialization File contains information about your computer's hardware settings. The file must be placed in Windows folder. It loads the sound, video and mouse drivers. It also contains drivers for a 16-bit system.
To edit SYSTEM.INI you need to use a file called SysEdit.exe. This file can be used with all versions of Windows 9x.
SYSTEM.INI file is not used widely inn later versions as compared to Windows 3x. However, it is still useful when it is required to load 16-bit MS-DOS real-mode drivers.
If the SYSTEM.INI file is missing or corrupted, Windows 9x will create a new one and start loading the settings again.
