EMM386.SYS is an extended memory manager. Without this file or any other extended memory manager, the computer would only able to use the basic 640KB. 
Syntax:
Device=Emm386[options][Parameters](for Config.sys only)
EMM386.exe=[options][Parameters](for autoexec only)
