Command Line

A function within Windows that executes individual commands typed in one at a time or one after the other if they are grouped in a text file with a .BAT extension. Many commands are identical to the original DOS commands and are still widely used today by developers and power users for file management and testing. For example, typing copy *.html d:\Webfiles at the command line copies all files in the current folder with an .HTML extension to the Webfiles folder in the D drive. Doing the same operation with Windows Explorer requires numerous mouse clicks and highlights and would take considerably longer to execute.

A Command Line Interface or CLI is a method of interacting with a computer by giving it lines of textual commands (that is, a sequence of characters) either from keyboard input or from a script. In its simplest form, the user types a command after the computer displays a prompt. The computer then carries out the command given.
