Windows 98:
Microsoft Windows 98 automatically creates a registry backup copy every time it starts. In addition the user can manually create a backup using the Registry Checker utility by running scanregw.exe from Start >> Run menu.
Windows NT:
On Windows NT by using either the “Last Known Good configuration” option or RDISK we can restore the registry to a stable working configuration.
At least during the installation most Windows applications write data to the Registry. The Registry can be edited directly by using the Registry Editor (regedit.exe) provided with the operating system. However, great care must be taken while dealing with registry because errors in it could disable the computer from functioning properly.
